Jellyfish

Starfish

Level: Level 1


Adult Participation: No

Class Ratio: 1:4


Class Length: 30 mins

This is the first level in our group swim program for new swimmers starting at age 3. Children build independence in the water, learn foundational safety habits, and practice basic swim techniques like breath control and kicking.

  • Safety Pledge: pool rules and safe swim behavior
  • Water Introduction: getting comfortable in and around water
  • Breath control: blowing bubbles 
  • Pool Safety: assisted jump to a float and climbing out of the pool
  • Kicks: straight-leg kicking to build strong foundational technique
  • Assisted Underwater Swims: going under with instructor support
  • Unassisted Underwater Swims: submerging and swimming short distances independently
  • Blows bubbles and fully submerges face in the water

  • Leans forward, puts face in, and swims 4–5 feet to instructor

  • Goes underwater confidently and without hesitation

  • Climbs out of the pool independently with no assistance

Seahorse

Level: Level 2


Adult Participation: No

Class Length: 30 mins

In this level, swimmers build on their confidence and begin swimming independently with greater control. We focus on proper body position, strong kicking, and learning to move efficiently through the water. Swimmers also practice new safety movements that help them feel more capable and in control during every lesson.

  • Side Kicking: builds balance, body alignment, and breath control

  • Freestyle Drills: strengthen timing, technique, and proper breathing patterns

  • Full-Length Freestyle – Swimming independently with controlled breathing

  • Backstroke Introduction: kicking and arm coordination with body awareness

  • Streamline Kick: reinforcing strong kicks and proper body position underwater

  • Performs unassisted rocketship kick to the instructor

  • Keeps kicks on the surface, maintaining body position throughout

  • Kicks with straight legs and pointed toes consistently

  • Swims to instructor using Octopus Arms independently

  • Comfortable floating on back without support

Guppy

Level: 3

Class Length: 30 minutes

In Level 3, swimmers begin learning freestyle with side breathing while continuing to build water confidence, control, and independence. The focus shifts to full-arm freestyle movements and safe, efficient breathing patterns.

Swimmers also continue key safety drills like independent floating, rolling, and using Octopus Arms to return to the wall or steps. This level is all about increasing stamina, control, and technique in preparation for longer distances.

  • Independent floating and rolling for safety and body control

  • Streamline kicking with strong, steady legs

  • Octopus arms for safe return to the wall or steps

  • Big arm circles to build freestyle arm movement

  • Side breathing with big arms to introduce rhythmic breathing

  • Independent freestyle with big arms and breath attempts

  • Performs big arm circles with consistent attempts at side breathing

  • Maintains strong kicks to keep body position throughout the swim

  • Floats and rolls unassisted for safety and breath control

Rainbow

Level: Level 4


Adult Participation: No

Class Ratio: 1:4


Class Length: 30 mins

In this level, swimmers work toward swimming a full pool length of freestyle with proper side breathing. They’re introduced to side kicking and rotation, learning how to roll for a breath and return to streamline. This skill takes time, but it’s critical for developing strong, efficient freestyle technique.

Swimmers continue practicing float-based safety and drills that support body control, breath timing, and stroke rhythm.

  • Swim to a Float: practicing control and safety positioning

  • Intro to Side Kicking: learning to maintain balance and alignment

  • Side Kicking with Rotation: rolling from stomach to side and back

  • Catch-Up Drill: building arm timing and breathing awareness

  • Unassisted Freestyle: full pool with side breathing attempts

  • Swims freestyle with side breathing every 3 strokes

  • Completes full pool length with strong, surface-level kicks

  • Rolls to the side for breath every 3 arm pulls

  • Swims independent side kick with control and proper body position

Angelfish

Level: Level 5


Adult Participation: No

Class Ratio: 1:4


Class Length: 30 mins

The focus of Level 5 is to refine freestyle technique while building strength, endurance, and confidence in swimming longer distances. Swimmers work on advanced freestyle drills and independent swimming to improve efficiency, timing, and breathing.

This level also introduces backstroke, starting with back kicking and the basics of arm circles to build a strong foundation for the next level.

  • Flutter Kicking in Streamline: strong, continuous kicks with body alignment

  • Unassisted Side Kicking: supporting body position and breath control

  • Freestyle Drills: improving timing, rhythm, and stroke mechanics

  • Unassisted Freestyle: full pool with proper breathing and clean technique

  • Intro to Backstroke: kicking and arm circles with body awareness

  • Swims freestyle confidently with proper side breathing and clean technique

  • Performs back kicking in streamline with hips up and body on the surface

Cardinalfish

Level: 6


Adult Participation: Yes

Class Ratio: 1:4

Class Length: 30 minutes

Level 6 introduces and strengthens all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Swimmers continue building endurance while focusing on clean technique across longer distances. Breaststroke and butterfly are introduced gradually, with an emphasis on consistent practice, proper timing, and body control.

This level prepares swimmers to complete multiple laps with solid form, stamina, and stroke confidence.

Level: Level 7

Class Length: 30 mins

This level is designed to prepare swimmers for the transition to swim team. The focus is on building endurance, refining technique, and learning foundational team skills. Swimmers practice sculling, IM order, and open turns, while gaining awareness of competition rules like legal finishes and disqualification standards.

By the end of this level, swimmers will be more confident, controlled, and meet-ready.

  • Stroke Development: refining all four strokes for efficiency and endurance

  • Competition Underwaters: streamline starts and pullouts per stroke

  • IM Order: practicing correct sequence: fly, back, breast, free

  • Sculling: building feel for the water and body control

Emler Swim School - Tots Swim Classes

Angelfish

Age: 7+ years

Level: Level 5


Adult Participation: No

Class Ratio: 1:8


Class Length: 30 mins

The goal of this level is to perfect their freestyle technique, while gaining strength and endurance to swim longer distances. The primary time will be spent on freestyle drills and independent freestyle swimming. This is a highly technical level for Freestyle, swimmers will practice different pieces of the stroke to put together a strong and efficient swim.  Backstroke is added in as well, working on back kicking and introduction to backstroke arm circles.
